Framework Announces Significant Price Increase for Laptop 13 Pro Due to Memory Module Costs

Framework, known for its commitment to repairable and upgradeable laptops, has issued a pricing update for its Laptop 13 Pro lineup. The company revealed that it has faced an unexpected surge in the cost of LPCAMM2 memory modules, with prices more than doubling compared to previous inventory. This sharp increase has forced Framework to adjust Laptop 13 Pro prices to maintain financial stability.

Impact on Pre-Orders and Customer Concerns

The Framework community, particularly on Reddit, has raised concerns about the company’s handling of pre-orders. At the Laptop 13 Pro launch, CEO Nirav Patel assured customers that existing pre-order prices would be honored, even if future prices changed. However, some early pre-order customers have reported receiving notifications that their original configurations are no longer available due to the memory price hike. In several cases, pre-orders for higher memory configurations have been downgraded, with customers receiving lower-capacity RAM modules at the original price point.

Framework’s Response and Adjustments

In its official update, Framework explained that while it has enough LPCAMM2 modules to fulfill all existing pre-orders, the available stock does not match the exact mix of 64 GB, 32 GB, and 16 GB modules required. As a result, the company has made the following adjustments:

  • Pre-orders for 64 GB RAM will be fulfilled as originally placed through Batch 4 of laptops and Batch 7 of mainboards. Orders beyond these batches will be adjusted to 32 GB modules, with customers charged the original 32 GB price.
  • Pre-orders for 32 GB RAM will be fulfilled as placed through Batch 4 of laptops and Batch 7 of mainboards. Later orders will be adjusted to 16 GB modules at the original 16 GB price.
  • Pre-built configurations with 32 GB RAM that do not have a 16 GB option, such as those with the Core X7 Ultra, will remain unchanged for now. Framework plans to introduce a 16 GB configuration for these models in the future.

Framework emphasized that these changes were made after careful consideration to minimize disruption for customers. The company reiterated its philosophy of absorbing price increases where possible, but stated that the scale of the LPCAMM2 cost jump was beyond what it could manage without risking its operations.

New Pricing for Future Orders

Alongside adjustments to existing pre-orders, Framework has updated its website pricing for new Laptop 13 Pro orders. The new LPCAMM2 memory pricing is set below the current sourcing cost in an effort to reduce the impact on new customers. However, Framework warns that once the remaining inventory of lower-cost 16 GB modules is depleted, prices will need to rise further.

Additionally, system and mainboard pricing for new orders now reflects increased costs for several components, including:

  • Upcoming price increases for Core Ultra Series 3 processors, affecting X7 and X9 configurations
  • Higher Windows license fees
  • Rising costs for memory, storage, and silicon in some Ryzen AI 300 Series models
