Commodore Unveils the C64C Ultimate: A Classic Reimagined
Commodore has officially introduced the C64C Ultimate, a fresh take on its acclaimed Commodore 64 Ultimate edition from 2025. This new variant swaps the iconic 1982 "bread-bin" chassis for the streamlined C64C case design that first appeared in 1986, offering fans a nostalgic yet modernized experience.
Reviving the Original C64C Case Molds
One of the most remarkable aspects of the C64C Ultimate is its case manufacturing process. Commodore has gone to great lengths to ensure authenticity by tracking down and reacquiring the original injection molds used for the C64C’s plastic housing in the 1980s. These molds have a storied history, having been utilized in Japan and later at Commodore’s Pennsylvania and Dallas facilities. After being discovered at auction in 2014 and surviving a factory fire, the molds eventually found their way to Individual Computers before Commodore secured them from IComp.de.
The cases produced from these historic molds retain the subtle flow marks characteristic of the original 1986 production run. These marks, caused by a two-point plastic cooling pattern, are now celebrated by Commodore as a unique mark of authenticity, connecting each new unit to its vintage roots.
Modern Hardware with Classic Appeal
Internally, the C64C Ultimate mirrors the existing "bread-bin" model, featuring FPGA-based, cycle-accurate Commodore 64 emulation. The system comes bundled with a curated selection of demos and games, as well as a spiral-bound user guide that covers everything from basic operation to programming in BASIC, making it accessible for both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts.
Edition Options and Pricing
Commodore is offering three distinct editions of the C64C Ultimate, all available for pre-order with shipping anticipated in late 2026:
- BASIC Beige: The standard edition, featuring the classic beige case, is priced at $299.99.
- Starlight Edition: This version includes a translucent case with game-reactive LED lighting, available for $349.99.
- Founder's Edition: The premium option boasts PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) gold keycaps, 24k gold-plated badges, and a translucent white case, retailing at $499.99.
Commodore has indicated that the C64C Ultimate is just the beginning, with several new products planned for release in 2026.
